What is TestDisk?

TestDisk is free, open-source data recovery software from CGSecurity. It was primarily designed to help you recover lost partitions and make non-booting disks bootable again when the cause is faulty software, certain viruses, or human error—such as accidentally deleting a partition table.

It is a powerful partition and data recovery utility that works at the file-system and partition-table level. Partition table recovery with TestDisk is straightforward once you follow the steps: select the disk, choose the partition table type, and let TestDisk analyze and search for lost or damaged structures.

TestDisk is best used for repairing partition tables, recovering deleted partitions, fixing boot sectors (FAT, NTFS), and restoring access to drives where the file system or partition layout has been damaged—not for signature-based file carving after severe file-system loss (for that, PhotoRec is the companion tool).

Damaged Partitions & Boot Issues

Built for partition table repair, boot sector recovery, and restoring access to corrupted structures.

Real Use Cases

  • 1 Recovering accidentally deleted partitions so data is visible again in the OS.
  • 2 Repairing a non-booting disk by fixing the partition table or boot sector.
  • 3 Restoring access to damaged drives where the file system is still largely intact.
  • 4 Helping technicians inspect and recover files from affected partitions.
  • 5 Rescuing data from corrupted partition structures (e.g. after mistaken repartitioning or table damage).

How TestDisk Compares

TestDisk is strongest for partition recovery and boot-repair workflows. It focuses on fixing partition tables, boot sectors, and file-system structures so that existing data becomes accessible again. It is not a polished graphical consumer app—it uses a command-line interface that technical users and careful beginners can follow with documentation.

Other tools in the broader recovery category often emphasize a GUI, automated scans, or signature-based file recovery (finding files by type when the file system is gone). TestDisk does not include a signature scanner; for recovering lost pictures or files by signature (e.g. from formatted media), PhotoRec, from the same project (CGSecurity), is the recommended companion. Comparisons are neutral: choose TestDisk when partition repair and boot recovery are the goal; consider other solutions when GUI convenience or signature-based recovery is the priority.

Best fit: partition repair, deleted partition recovery, boot sector and MFT repair, and technical recovery workflows—not flashy consumer UI or raw file carving.

Companion Recovery Tool

PhotoRec

PhotoRec is a separate, dedicated tool for recovering lost, deleted, or formatted files—including photos, videos, documents, and archives. It is part of the same CGSecurity recovery ecosystem as TestDisk but serves a different purpose: individual file recovery rather than partition or file-system repair.

What it does

  • Recovers deleted, lost, or formatted files by type
  • Targets photos, videos, documents, and archives
  • Scans raw disk data block-by-block for known file signatures
  • Can still recover files when the file system is badly damaged or the drive has been reformatted

How it’s different

TestDisk focuses on partition repair and partition recovery—fixing tables and boot sectors so the system can see your data again. PhotoRec focuses on file-by-file recovery when the file system is missing or unusable. Choose TestDisk for partition and boot issues; choose PhotoRec when you need to recover individual files (e.g. after a format or severe damage).

Usability

A command-line version is available for advanced users. For a simpler experience, QPhotoRec provides a beginner-friendly graphical interface (GUI) you can use with a mouse.

Trust & Transparency

TestDisk is open-source (GPL v2+). The code can be reviewed, audited, and modified. This supports credibility and safety: there are no hidden behaviors, and the recovery logic is visible to the community.

We state clearly: TestDisk is a command-line utility. It does not offer a graphical point-and-click interface. Navigation is via keyboard in a terminal. Once you learn the flow—create log, select disk, partition type, analyze, search—it is manageable for many users.

We recommend downloading from the official CGSecurity site or trusted repositories to avoid tampered builds. We do not make exaggerated recovery guarantees; success depends on disk condition, what overwrote data, and how you use the tool.
